OUR MISSION
The Animal Welfare Federation of Connecticut, Inc. (AWFCT) is a partnership of animal welfare advocates dedicated to improving the status and well-being of companion animals in Connecticut.
ABOUT
US
What is the the Animal Welfare Federation of Connecticut?
AWFCT is not a shelter or rescue organization, but its members include rescue and shelter professionals, animal control officers and veterinarians working collectively as a unified voice in support of animal welfare issues in Connecticut. The primary focus of the Federation is to create a statewide coalition
that focuses on spay/neuter efforts. The Federation seeks to address
the companion animal overpopulation problem by (1) promoting the
humane treatment of animals and encouraging the enforcement of
laws to protect them; (2) acting as a resource center by sharing
and distributing information that promotes animal welfare; and
(3) promoting educational programs that encourage responsible
companion animal ownership.

What
are the Benefits of a Coalition?
Animal welfare coalitions typically involve all organizations
that have a stake or interest in improving the standard
of care for companion animals-veterinarians, animal control
agencies, departments of health, rescue organizations, shelters,
sanctuaries, and members of the community.
The
Federation recognizes that no single organization can remedy
all the logistical, social and economic problems facing
companion animals in our state. By working together, we
believe we can make a considerable difference in improving
the standard of care for companion animals in Connecticut.
The
sizable membership and statewide presence of coalitions
create opportunities for stronger social influence, as well
as access to an increasing number of educational and funding
sources.

Perhaps the
most important benefit of a coalition is the unification of diverse
groups of people who share a common interest in helping animals.
Through cooperative efforts, we believe we can create stronger
and more effective solutions and programs for animals.
To date, thirty
states in our nation have created animal welfare coalitions in
their communities. While the programs vary widely in scope, they
demonstrate that collaborative efforts are a more effective way
to attain goals.
Our Philosophy
As
a leader in the humane movement, the Federation is committed to
helping build a life-saving framework for companion animals in
the state of Connecticut. This framework includes:
- Support
of trap-neuter-return (TNR) for feral cats
- Support
for early-age and low-cost spay/neuter programs, and a commitment
to use our shared resources to provide such services
- Support
of animal welfare protection groups, rescue groups, or No Kill
shelters to take custody of animals that are scheduled to be
destroyed in traditional shelters
- Support
for innovative, proactive and life-saving programs initiated
by animal control officers and/or municipal shelters
- Support
for the achievements and successes of No Kill rescue groups
and shelters
- Promotion
of caring, compassion and responsible pet ownership through
education and outreach
- Promotion
of community-wide efforts to advance the status of shelter animals
- Opposition
to punitive ordinances including, but not limited to, pet limit
laws, prohibition of feeding of stray cats, and those mandating
that cats not be allowed to roam outdoors.
- Promotion
of cooperation and collaboration among individuals and organizations
in the Federation and the greater animal welfare community
- Support
for creative and innovative strategies that save lives
In meeting the challenge of building a humane community, the Federation is committed to the highest quality of standards and professionalism.
